The new governor of MI, Gretchen Whitmer, has proposed a $0.45 increase in the Michigan gas tax. She campaigned on “fix the damn roads”.
That would raise the total gas tax in Michigan to over $1.00.
As of July, 2018, Michigan ranked #6 in the nation for gas taxes.
2setsofrules would suggest that if Michigan can’t maintain its roads having the 6th highest gas tax in the country, it’s not the gas tax that’s the problem.
Moving from #6 to #1 is not gonna solve the root of the problem. The problem in Michigan is the R’s and D’s!
To add injury to insult, according to an article in Michigan Capital Confidential, 40% of the new tax would not add to the road budget. The politicians all talk about funding being the problem. If that’s the case, why is 40% of the new gas tax being siphoned (see what I did there?) off and NOT adding to the road budget?
