A small victory against the speech police

The 1st Amendment to the US Constitution   guarantees freedom of speech.  It seems over the last 10 years or more, particularly at universities, our Constitutional rights have been under attack.

Here is an article from justthenews.com about a university professor that has won at the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals after being punished by officials at Shawnee State University for refusing to address a transgender student with the student’s preferred pronoun.   That is, the professor would not call a he a she.

Agree with it or not – what is the correct pronoun to use – it’s a dangerously slippery slope when those in power feel they have a right to control speech.

From the article:

Oral argument didn’t go well for Shawnee State last fall. Judge Thapar asked then if the university would force a Jewish professor to honor a student’s request to be addressed as “My Fuhrer.”

The fact that this case made it to the 6th Circuit tells you just how far we as a country have come from the drafting of the Constitution.
