According to an article on MLive, the city council of Ann Arbor , Michigan, recently passed a law banning the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21. (Last I knew the state Attorney General has not decided whether to challenge this law.) The article states many other municipalities around the country have already done so. This year the Michigan state board of education has been working on new regulations regarding the use of bathrooms by transgender students. School districts around the country are dealing with this issue thanks to the Federal government. One Albuquerque elementary school assistant principal went so far as to ban teachers from saying “boys and girls” – although he later walked that statement back.
Ann Arbor has at times been described as 25 square miles surrounded by reality – it is a liberal town no doubt. I have to imagine, if the state were to ever finalize and issue regulations allowing students to essentially use which ever bathroom they wanted, based on what gender the student decided to be that particular day, Ann Arbor would be in full agreement.
Which means that we are at a point where some people think a 12 year old is capable of determining that he or she really is the opposite sex but a 20 year old is not capable of determining whether he or she should buy cigarettes (or alcohol for that matter).
